Wow. Today I found out that I received the coveted Wolfe Study Abroad Scholarship to help pay for my expenses in India. I immediately screamed and jumped into the arms of a friend upon receiving this exciting news. This truly means a lot to me because I do not come from a family that has extra funds lying around that I can splurge on such travel without forward thinking (aka med school).
I didn’t know much about the man behind the scholarship before applying, but I just did my research. John F. Wolfe is the chairman and CEO of The Dispatch Printing Company (Columbus Dispatch). The Wolfe Study Abroad Scholarships Endowed Fund was established September 1, 1999 with a $1 million gift from the Robert F. Wolfe and Edgar T. Wolfe Foundation. Over the last 10 years, scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each have been distributed annually to more than 200 undergraduate students. The Wolfe Scholarship, which is administered by the Office of International Affairs, is the cornerstone of Ohio State’s study abroad programs and helps to enhance the educational experience of Ohio State students. In 2009, Wolfe presented another $1 million gift to the university, which doubled the endowment that supports the Wolfe Study Abroad Scholarships. As a result, this year, the award amount increased to $2,500. The financial support of these scholarships has changed the lives of a growing number of students who have had the opportunity to participate in long-term study abroad programs.
I am thankful for him in investing so much money into this scholarship for many students like me. I will have a chance to meet him at the luncheon and I am so excited! I also cannot help to think that I might be in his position in the future having the opportunity to give back to the university that has given me so much.
“The vision we have at Ohio State is to be the leading university in the preparation of global leaders,” said William I. Brustein, Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs. “This will be a transformative experience for these students, not only educationally, but personally.”
I couldn’t have said it any better. #thankGod #blessed #humbling
Edit: 4/25/14. Thankful to have shared this experience with 30 other outstanding Ohio State students. Found out that 3 other Wolfe scholars are going on the same India trip as I am! And that my mom knows Mr. Wolfe from serving him and his family at Hunan Lion. Always a small world 🙂 I am so incredibly blessed and honored to be a Wolfe recipient and definitely will remember this every day that I am abroad. No words can adequately encompass how inspired and humbled I am at Mr. Wolfe’s generosity.
